Our Leadership Mentoring Programme is powered by experience

Mike Hickman, Leadership Development and Training Manager at Community First Yorkshire, shares why he’s so passionate about our Leadership Mentoring Programme.

As a former teacher, teacher trainer and academic – not to mention having been in leadership myself when young and, shall we say, very green! – I believe passionately in the benefits of mentoring.

No, more than that – I know that mentoring can make a tremendous difference to the job, from managing the day-to-day issues all the way to dealing with the unexpected.

At the heart of our Leadership Mentoring Programme is a dynamic network of mentors whose experience spans a wide range of industries and sectors. From public service to private enterprise, charity leadership to education, our mentors bring not only years of professional experience but also a shared passion for making a difference

Our mentors are leaders, changemakers, and innovators who have shaped organisations and communities through their work.

Behind the profiles: a closer look

Our mentors come from all walks of life including the public sector, CEOs and founders of charities, teachers and managers of apprenticeship programmes to private sector consultants in HR, marketing and operational leadership.

Their coaching credentials and mentoring backgrounds are equally diverse, ranging from formal leadership development programmes to informal peer support and one-on-one coaching.

As community champions, our mentors have:

  • Led organisations through transformation, launching new services and building high-performing teams
  • Dedicated their careers to vulnerable groups, from young people to the homeless, creating meaningful support systems
  • Implemented innovative solutions to complex social and operational challenges, ensuring sustainable growth and service delivery
  • A commitment to lifelong learning.

Mentorship is as much about listening as it is about guiding – and our mentors are living examples of continual growth. They are:

  • Qualified coaches and NLP practitioners, many hold ILM qualifications and bring extensive experience mentoring leaders, managers, and frontline staff
  • Empathetic supporters who provide a safe space for reflection, personal exploration, and skill development
  • Strategic thinkers who understand the intricacies of planning, funding, and executing impactful projects.
