VLOG: Meet Stef – championing volunteers across North Yorkshire
In the first episode of our new vlog for volunteers and volunteer coordinators, we’re shining a light on Stef, a dedicated volunteer coordinator, whose volunteering journey began at just 14.
Starting out as a volunteer in her local youth club, Stef went on to complete a youth work apprenticeship and spent 17 years supporting young people through the local authority.
Today, she works full‑time for North Yorkshire Youth, coordinating two key programmes:
- The Buddy Network
A light‑touch, community‑based scheme that supports young people transitioning out of professional services and towards independence. - The Independent Visiting Scheme
A programme that connects young people in local authority care with an independent volunteer who acts as a long‑term, trusted friend – often well into adulthood.
Stef covers communities right across the county, supporting volunteers, building connections and helping create opportunities that make a genuine difference. From recruitment and training to planning activities and finding funding, no two days are ever the same.
What makes the role so rewarding?
Despite the challenges of covering such a wide area, she says the variety, the people and the impact are what make the role so rewarding.
And her advice for anyone interested in a volunteer coordinator role? “Look at the support you have, share your successes, share your case studies because your team will open the doors to networks and opportunities.”
