BLOG: Celebrating the heartbeat of rural wellbeing in Village Halls Week
As this year’s Village Halls Week gets underway, development officer Hilary Ashton reflects on the theme for the week – the importance of village halls to the health and wellbeing of rural communities. She writes:
“Village Halls Week is here – and this year we’re shining a spotlight on something truly vital: the powerful role community buildings play in boosting health and wellbeing across rural areas.
“In villages across North Yorkshire, community halls are far more than bricks and mortar. They’re warm, welcoming spaces where people come together to stay active, make connections and feel part of something bigger.
Keeping fit and feeling good
“From morning yoga sessions to low impact exercise classes, walking groups to dance clubs, village halls are often the only local space where residents can keep active without travelling miles. For many rural communities, these activities aren’t just hobbies – they’re lifelines, helping people maintain physical health, confidence and independence.
Combating loneliness
“Loneliness can hit hard in remote areas, especially for older residents or those living alone. Village halls offer a friendly, accessible environment where people can drop in for coffee mornings, craft groups or simply a chat. These small moments of connection make a big difference, helping to build supportive social networks that last well beyond the hall’s doors.
Creating community
“Whether it’s a volunteer-run lunch club, a mental health support group, a warm space session or a community workshop, village halls bring people together in ways that strengthen the fabric of rural life. They are places where neighbours become friends and ideas become action.
As we celebrate Village Halls Week 2026, we’re reminded just how essential these buildings are – not only as physical spaces but as catalysts for healthier, happier, more connected communities.
“Here’s to every village hall, every volunteer and every visitor. Rural wellbeing starts here!”
