Meet super-sharer and volunteer coordinator, Morgan Spicer

24 June 2025
Our volunteering interview this month features Volunteers Coordinator with Share Skipton, Morgan Spicer. We met up with Morgan to gain an insight into her role, her charity and any advice she has for people looking to take on a similar challenge.

Hi, I’m Morgan Spicer, originally from Texas but now happily settled in North Yorkshire after ten years in London. My professional background is in graphic design and marketing, but in early 2025, I took on a new and exciting role as Volunteer Coordinator for Share Skipton – a community-run Library of Things.

At Share Skipton, I’m responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting our wonderful team of volunteers who keep the library running. From librarians to technicians, inventory organisers to social media helpers, our volunteers do it all. One of the things I’m most passionate about is helping people find a role that fits them – rather than trying to fit everyone into a predefined box. We’re always on the lookout for new energy and ideas, and we believe there’s space here for everyone.

What drew me to Share Skipton?

I first heard about the idea years ago at a local ‘make and mend’ session hosted by Yarndale. That’s where I met Angela, who spoke passionately to the group about reducing waste by borrowing, fixing, and sharing instead of buying. The seed of Share Skipton was planted there and then. Fast-forward to 2024, Angela brought that vision to life and opened the Library of Things. When I saw the job advert for Volunteer Coordinator, I applied with all fingers and toes crossed – and was thrilled to join the team shortly after.

What it’s like to be a Volunteer Coordinator?

If you’re thinking about becoming a Volunteer Coordinator or Manager, know that your role is all about people. You’ll meet individuals from all walks of life, with a wide range of motivations, skills, and experiences. Embrace those differences and ask for input whenever you can – volunteers are at the heart of everything, and their insight is invaluable. You won’t be able to make every change work for everyone, but if you listen and stay connected, you’ll build trust and make real progress together.

What I’ve learned along the way

This role has shown me how much I value structure and routine – even in a flexible, part-time job. I love starting my day before the shift begins, tidying the space, checking emails, and doing admin while it’s quiet. Our aim is to eventually open every day of the week, and I’m excited to help make that happen by expanding our volunteer team.

It’s also influenced my personal life: I’ve become more conscious of the environmental impact of my choices. I’ve started sewing my own clothes, shopping local, and avoiding unnecessary purchases – all inspired by our mission at Share Skipton.

Something you might not know about me…

I’ve always been fascinated by human connection – what makes people tick and how we relate to one another. During lockdown, I took several free mental health courses, which eventually led me to train in suicide prevention and become a volunteer for Samaritans. I often take the 2–6am shift, and I’ve had some incredibly meaningful conversations during those quiet hours.

Oh – and I’ve won a rodeo before! I used to break horses professionally and loved it. Life has taken me in a very different direction since then, but I carry those experiences with me every day.
