From our garden to our table – growing confidence and connection

People with sight and hearing loss across Scarborough and the surrounding area are finding friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging through a project that’s helping communities grow – quite literally.

Coastline Sight & Hearing’s “From Our Garden to Our Table” project brings people together to grow, cook and share food. From tending allotments in Scarborough, Filey, Pickering and Whitby to preparing meals in local community halls, the group is creating a supportive, social space where people can connect, learn new skills and build confidence.

Led by lived experience
The charity is run by trustees who all have sight or hearing loss themselves. Founder and trustee Tony Mollica says that lived experience is at the heart of everything they do:

“The main object of the group is to help people with sight and hearing loss to be more independent and to build confidence. Over the years, many members who came to us not knowing where to turn have found connection and purpose – some have even gone on to become trustees themselves.”

Growing together
Project coordinator Sally Sutton explains that the project runs year-round.

“During the spring and summer we meet weekly at the allotments to grow fruit and vegetables. In the winter months we move indoors to cook the produce we’ve grown. It’s all about providing a safe, welcoming space where people can come together.”
For trustee Dave Tayne, the project has become an important social outlet:

“It’s wonderful – such an outlet. We’re a mixed group of deaf and visually-impaired people. Sometimes communication can be tricky, but we find ways to make it work. It really helps build confidence and friendship.”

Life-changing impact
The group has seen remarkable transformations. Sally recalls one member who didn’t think gardening was for him:

“He was quite reserved at first, but now he’s our most regular participant. He comes to every session, makes a cup of tea for everyone and takes ownership of some of the tasks. We never imagined that when we started.”
Dave agrees that the difference is clear:

“A friend of mine who had a stroke joined the group and his family said they couldn’t believe the change in him – that’s what this project does.”

Supported by Community First Yorkshire
The project was made possible with funding from the National Lottery Reaching Communities programme, with help from Community First Yorkshire’s Development Officer Nicky Ruddick, who supported Coastline Sight & Hearing through the grant process.

“Nicky has been brilliant – patient and professional, and she helped us get the grant that made this possible,” says Tony.

From Our Garden to Our Table shows how simple ideas can have a big impact – turning growing, cooking and friendship into a powerful way to reduce isolation and build confidence.
