Join the celebrations for this year’s International Day of Older People
This year’s International Day of Older People – on Tuesday 1 October – is all about connection, celebration and community. Across North Yorkshire, local groups and organisations are hosting a fantastic range of events to mark the occasion – and everyone is invited to get involved.
Whether you’re looking to meet new people, enjoy some entertainment, or learn more about healthy ageing, there’s something for everyone. Here are just a few highlights:
Upcoming events
- Thursday 25 September at 2pm Harrogate Over 50s Forum: Tea Party (members only) at St John’s Church Knaresborough
- Sunday 28 September at 12 – 4pm Knaresborough Connectors: local groups supporting healthy ageing at Stockwell Wellbeing Hub
- Monday 29 September at 10am – 4pm Selby Ageing Well Health Fair at Selby Leisure Centre/Selby Abbey
- Tuesday 1 October at 12 – 3pm Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors: stalls and live music from a talented 15-year-old local singer at Filey Fields, Filey
- Wednesday 2 October at 10.30am – 12.30pm Skipton Step Into Action: a singalong and tea dance at Skipton Medical Centre
- Wednesday 2 October at 10.30 – 12.30 Northallerton Age Friendly Forum: seated exercise with NY Sport and Leisure + falls prevention support at Northallerton Library
- Throughout October at various times and venues North Yorkshire Council Care Provider Services will be running events with a ‘Day at the Races’ theme and a International Day of Older People photo competition
- Throughout October at various times and venues Active North Yorkshire/Sport and Leisure will link with current classes supporting people to be active
- Slipper Socials are taking place at Catterick Library on Tuesday 1 October, 2.30 – 4.30pm) and Helmsley Library (Friday 10 October, 10am – 1pm).
The Fire and Police HQ in Northallerton will also be flooded with purple light to mark the day – a powerful symbol of support for older people in our communities.
