Supporting male victims of domestic abuse: Raising awareness and strengthening our response
Domestic abuse can affect anyone – regardless of gender. Whilst most reported cases involve women as victims, men can and do experience domestic abuse, in fact 1 in 5 men have experienced domestic abuse in their lifetime and it is vital we recognise this within our wider community.
Men may experience domestic abuse from partners, ex-partners, or family members. Abuse may be physical, emotional, financial, coercive or controlling – just as with any victim.
However, male victims often face barriers, such as:
- Fear of not being believed
- Assumptions that domestic abuse only happens to women
- Reluctance to seek help due to stigma
- Concern about being perceived as the perpetrator
These barriers can leave men feeling isolated and unsure where to turn for help. By increasing awareness, we can help reduce these barriers and encourage earlier, safer access to support.
During April Community Safety Hub Officers, along with officers from North Yorkshire Police and IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services) will be hosting a series of community engagement events across the county, as well as visiting local Andy’s Man Clubs and Men’s Sheds:
Events
- Whitby Leisure Centre: 10 April – 10-11.30am
- Tesco, Skipton Road, Harrogate: 14 April – 10am-12pm
- Balmoral Centre, Scarborough: 16 April – 11am-1pm
- Dalby Forest Visitor Centre: 17 April – 10am-12pm
By raising awareness, we can help ensure victims (regardless of gender) feel safe and get the support they deserve.
