New toolkit – practical guidance to help you demonstrate your real impact
Most charities, community groups and social enterprises collect valuable information about their work every day, from attendance figures and survey responses to feedback, stories and case studies.
The challenge is often knowing how to use that information to understand and demonstrate the difference they are making.
To help with this, Community First Yorkshire has launched a new online Impact Toolkit – providing practical guidance to help voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations understand, measure and communicate their impact with confidence.
A free resource
The toolkit has been designed as a free resource that organisations can work through at their own pace, whether they are just getting started with impact measurement or looking to strengthen their existing approach.
With that in mind, it takes users through the full impact journey, from planning what they want to achieve and collecting useful evidence, through to analysing findings, using local and national data and creating an effective impact report.
Practical, achievable approaches
Recognising that many organisations have limited time and resources, the guidance focuses on practical, achievable approaches rather than complex methodologies. Users are encouraged to start with the questions that matter most to their organisation and build their confidence over time.
Community data and impact officer and toolkit author, Robyn Rhule-Samuel, explained the value of stronger impact reporting:
“Impact isn’t just about numbers. Photos and stories can be just as valuable in showing the difference we make in our communities. It’s never too late to start collecting impact data – every piece helps build a clearer picture of the difference your work is making, and today’s data can become tomorrow’s success story.”
The resource includes five step-by-step guides covering:
- Planning for impact
- Collecting useful data
- Understanding findings
- Using national and local data
- Writing and sharing an impact report.
Alongside practical guidance, the toolkit also includes plain English explanations of common impact measurement terms, helping organisations navigate a topic that can often feel complex and confusing.
