Community First Yorkshire is celebrating Small Charity Week by shining a light on the charities, community groups, volunteers and trustees making a big difference across the region.

Running from 22 to 29 June, the Week is a national celebration of the vital role small charities play in our local communities. It’s a chance to recognise the difference they make every day. From village halls and youth clubs to local support groups and community projects, they bring people together, create opportunities and offer support where it’s needed most.

We’re here to help

For Community First Yorkshire, it’s also an opportunity to remind groups that they’re not on their own – at a time when the sector is facing significant challenges.

“Small charities are so often at the heart of their communities. They understand local needs, know the people they support and are often the first to step in when help is needed,” said chief executive, Jane Colthup.

“But many have been under increasing pressure in recent years. Funding is becoming harder to secure, costs are rising and demand for support continues to grow. For many groups, finding the time and capacity to plan for the future can feel overwhelming.

“That’s where we can help – offering tailored one-to-one support to help people feel more confident and move forward with purpose.”

Vital role

Highlighting the vital role that small charities play, Stephen Biggs, Manager at Just the Job in Richmond, said: “Charities are brilliant at filling gaps and responding quickly to changing situations. They’re so important to people who might otherwise be missed.”

That’s why the support available ranges from advice on funding and governance to specialised training, mentoring programmes and networks that help bring people together to share ideas, successes and insights.

Making a difference

This support is already making a difference. Michael Whiteley, Chair of Trustees at The Sparks Project in Scarborough, said: “As a small charity, funding is a big challenge. We received really useful advice and made great connections, which has given us confidence for the future.”

Jill Gillanders, Chair of Trustees at Thirsk Youth Club, added: “The development officer suggested things we hadn’t even thought of and gave me real confidence. The mentoring was especially valuable.”

So, this Small Charity Week, Community First Yorkshire is encouraging charities, community groups and volunteers across the county to explore the support available, share their stories and celebrate the difference they make every day.
