How a simple conversation sparked a youth club that’s changing lives in Thirsk 💚

Thirsk Youth Club began with a moment of concern on a dark evening. Youth leader and trustee Jill Gillanders came across a small group of children sheltering in a church porch. They were only ten or eleven years old, out late with nowhere safe to go.

Having recently watched a documentary about county lines, Jill felt an immediate sense of worry for how vulnerable they seemed. When she asked why they were there, their answer was simple:

“We just want somewhere to go.”

That short conversation set the wheels in motion for what would become Thirsk Youth Club – a place built on warmth, welcome and the belief that every young person deserves support and opportunity.

Supporting young people through challenges

Jill and the volunteers have welcomed many young people through the door, including those who have experienced trauma or struggled at school. She speaks openly about the effects early trauma can have on a child’s developing brain, but also about the hope found in positive experiences, encouragement and consistency.

One young boy in particular stood out to Jill. Excluded from school, unable to read or write, and often climbing onto the roof of the community hall, he had every reason to disengage.

But the team kept showing up for him.
They greeted him with patience, structure and care — and soon, progress appeared in the smallest of moments.

A volunteer excitedly shared that she’d asked him to pick up a dropped piece of food. Not only did he pick it up, but he put it in the bin.

To most people this might sound trivial, Jill said, but for the youth club team,

“It was huge… it’s these little wins that we hang on to, and they really do inspire us.”

Collaboration at the heart of the club

Community First Yorkshire has supported Thirsk Youth Club through governance advice, policies, mentoring and opportunities to connect with others in the sector.

This included a stakeholder event bringing together youth leaders, local councillors, VMP, parents and voluntary groups – all committed to helping the club thrive. The energy around the table showed just how valued the club has become to families across the area.

Development Officer Vicki Sharp shared how powerful it was to hear directly from parents and to see the community working together to strengthen the club for the future.

A team driven by kindness

As the youth club continues to grow, Jill remains incredibly proud of her volunteers and the young people they support.

She believes in the innate goodness of people and is moved by the small glimpses of character that shine through as young people begin to trust, grow and connect.

“It makes me quite proud of them… everybody is born good.
When you see elements of people’s character that warm your heart — I just love that. It makes me glow inside.”

Building brighter futures, one young person at a time

Thirsk Youth Club stands as a powerful example of what can happen when local people step up, listen and act. What began as a chance encounter in a church porch has become a lifeline – a place where young people feel welcome, seen and supported.

Community First Yorkshire is proud to stand alongside Jill and the team as they continue creating a space where young people can grow, belong and find their path.
