From cakes to confidence: Meet Vicky, Selby Boxing Club’s knockout volunteer

When you walk into Selby Boxing Club, you’ll likely hear the rhythmic thud of gloves on pads, the buzz of encouragement, and the unmistakable energy of young people pushing themselves to be better. One of the team behind that energy is Vicky Neville – a dedicated volunteer boxing coach who’s been part of the club for the past six years.

Vicky’s journey into volunteering wasn’t just about sport – it was about making a difference. “I really like helping children develop an interest in boxing,” she says. “It’s not just about learning to throw a punch. It’s about building confidence, finding focus, making friends, and sometimes just having a safe space to let off steam.”

Her role at the club is hands-on and heart-led. She coaches young boxers, guiding them not only in technique and fitness but in life skills that extend far beyond the ring. “The best advice I ever got was: ‘Coach the person, not the boxer’. Skills and fitness matter, but what lasts is confidence, discipline, and self-belief – especially outside the club.”

Volunteering, Vicky admits, isn’t always easy. “It’s very time-consuming and takes real commitment. It can eat into family time. But when you see a young person thrive, maybe even change their life – it’s all worth it.”

And here’s a surprise twist: while Vicky’s known for her fitness and coaching, she also has a sweet side. “Even though I’m a Personal Trainer and boxing coach and I love to eat healthily, I still make birthday and wedding cakes now and again! I don’t get to eat them, but I love making them.”

Her story is a reminder that volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing passion, patience, and sometimes a piping bag to the table. If you’re thinking about volunteering, Vicky’s advice is simple: be ready to give your time, but know that what you get back is priceless.
